DIANE MODAHL LAUNCHES URBANATHLON 2008
Former GB Olympic athlete Diane Modahl launched Europe's first-ever Urbanathlon at Sportcity today, March 13th.
Exactly four months before the event takes place on the same site, Diane put some local youngsters and Urbanathlon staff through their paces in front of a posse of local press. Obstacles including two cars sporting graffiti created by Urbanathlon partner Peak Pursuits proved quite a challenge but great fun for the runners.
Diane said '"I'm delighted to be launching Urbanathlon today and will be keeping a close eye on progress as race day approaches. The main reason I was so keen to help was the fact that Urbanathlon's main charity, StreetGames is such a deserving cause. They give disadvantaged kids opportunities to play sport and I think that's fantastic. I'll be encouraging all my friends in athletics to take part and give this unique event their support."

Urbanathlon Manchester is a high energy, high adventure addition to the World Class events programme in Manchester great for walkers, joggers, familes and fitness fiends! All the ingredients are there for this to develop into one of the UK’s great Urban adventure races and to attract large numbers of UK multi sports and adventure race participants into Manchester, home of the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the FINA World Swimming Championships in 2008.
What the heck is it? We'll build a challenging 10km urban assault course in the inspi rational setting of SportCity, East Manchester with up to fifteen obstacles that will bar your way to glory. From the dizzying stairwells of the City of Manchester Stadium via the B of the Bang to mud-drenched fields and death slides this undulating course, set in an urban park will provide you with the challenge to  end all challenges. If you’ve ever wanted to test yourself by running over parked cars, striding through rivers or scrambling through a giant spiders web along with over 1,000 fellow Urban-athletes then this event is made for you! All this, located two miles from the heart of Manchester, on a Sunday morning. Perfect!
